United States Army · Western Front · Decorated · Czechoslovakia 1945

Joseph “Joe” Pietroforte was born on 21 February 1920 near Bari, Italy, and emigrated to the United States as a small child. He grew up in Philadelphia, in a family with seven brothers and a sister. During the Second World War, he served in the U.S. Army, initially with the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, and later with the 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division. He attained the rank of sergeant.

As a bazooka operator, Pietroforte fought in the Battle of the Bulge during the bitter winter of 1944–1945. Serving with General George S. Patton’s Third Army, he helped protect his fellow soldiers by disabling German armour. His actions earned him the nickname “Bazooka Joe” and the Silver Star. His decorations also include the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge. He ended the war in Europe in Czechoslovakia in May 1945.
After the war, Pietroforte settled in California’s San Fernando Valley, married his wife, Dorothy, and raised a family. He managed drive-in cinemas and later worked in film distribution and production.
